Civic Cinema- Philadelphia
Civic Cinema, a project of the Florida Theatre, sponsored by Times-Union Media, presents issue-oriented classic Hollywood films that explore topics of interest to our community. Each film screening is followed by a panel discussion of local experts. This edition of Civic Cinema presents the film Philadelphia, directed by Jonathan Demme, and starring Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks, who won the Academy Award for his performance. The film will be followed by a panel discussion on contemporary LGBTQ issues in Jacksonville. Panelists include: Dan Merkan, JASMYN’s Director of Policy; Michelle Adams-Manning, North Florida Development Officer of Equality Florida; and Kaitlin Legg, Director of the LGBT Resource Center at the University of North Florida.

Andrew Beckett (Tom Hanks), a gay, HIV positive lawyer, is fired from his law firm in fear that they might contract HIV from him. After Andrew is fired, in a last attempt for peace, he sues his former law firm with the help of a homophobic lawyer, Joe Miller (Denzel Washington). During the court battle, Miller sees that Beckett is no different than anyone else on the gritty streets of the city of brotherly love, sheds his homophobia and helps Beckett with his case before AIDS overcomes him.
